UN representative sees highest danger for expansion of Gaza war

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, sees the highest risk of the Gaza war spreading to the Israeli-occupied West Bank and beyond.
"This is no longer about early warnings," Türk said in Geneva on Thursday. "I'm ringing the biggest possible alarm bell about the occupied West Bank." The risk of a major expansion in the Middle East is also high, Türk said. In a speech to UN member states, he called for an end to the occupation of the Palestinian territories. The Palestinians had a right to self-determination. Israel has a right to exist, he emphasized.
Türk described the humanitarian catastrophe in the sealed-off Gaza Strip, which he had seen for himself during a visit to Egypt and Jordan and in talks with humanitarian aid workers last week. Israel has not yet granted his request for visits to Israel and the Gaza Strip.
