According to the UN Children's Fund Unicef, seriously injured and traumatized children and young people in the streets of the Gaza Strip show the devastating consequences of the war particularly clearly. Unicef spokeswoman Tess Ingram reported on tragic fates after a visit to Gaza on Tuesday.
She spoke to reporters in Geneva via video link from Cairo. According to the Palestinian authorities, 14,000 of the more than 33,000 victims of the war are children and teenagers. More than 12,000 minors have been injured. This information cannot be independently verified at present. Ingram believes that the true figures are probably even higher.
Ingram cited the individual fates of children who were captured, shot and seriously injured in the war. Many children actually needed urgent operations that could not be carried out in the Gaza Strip. Operations such as amputations had to be survived without anaesthetic.
The remaining hospitals lack bandages, needles, anesthetics and painkillers and much more. Children often have to live with severe pain for weeks. Many should actually be taken out of the Gaza Strip, but less than half of the applications for medical evacuation are approved.
The Gaza war was triggered by the unprecedented massacre carried out by terrorists from Hamas and other extremist groups on October 7, 2023 in Israel near the border with Gaza. More than 1,200 people were killed on the Israeli side and a further 250 hostages were taken to the Gaza Strip. Israel responded with massive airstrikes and a ground offensive.
