In response to the pro-Palestinian protests and the occupation of rooms, the University of Geneva banned access for outsiders on Saturday. The measure was taken for security reasons and because the protesters wanted to maintain their occupation outside normal opening hours.
Despite intensive negotiations, talks with a delegation of students and later in the scientific committee had not resulted in an agreement, the university management announced on Saturday evening. The student coordination is maintaining its illegal occupation.
This is regrettable from the university management's point of view, especially as significant progress has been made. However, the university is obliged to ensure security on its premises. Various incidents had shown that the precautions taken to date were not sufficient to maintain security against people from outside the university.
The university is therefore restricting access with immediate effect to members of the university community, students and employees who present their card.
