In 2023, both the Roman Catholic Church and the Protestant Reformed Church will see more people leave the church than in the previous year. This is the prediction of Urs Winter, project manager at the Swiss Pastoral Sociological Institute St. Gallen (SPI).
The increase in the number of people leaving the church since September is not surprising for Winter, as he told the Keystone-SDA news agency when asked. In neighboring countries, such as Germany, the number of people leaving the church has also risen sharply following the publication of abuse studies in the Catholic Church. The results were a wake-up call and would be the straw that broke the camel's back for many people who had already considered leaving the church.
According to Winter, the typical candidate to leave is an educated man living in an urban area. This will probably also be the case this year. In rural areas, on the other hand, the connection to the church remains stronger and the number of people leaving is lower. People see more of what the church does locally, as they maintain closer contact with the church and uphold traditions, for example.
