Valais State Councillor Roberto Schmidt will not stand for re-election in 2025. This was announced by his party, the social-liberal center, on Thursday.
Although the party regrets his personal decision, it will endeavor to defend its seat in the 2025 State Council elections, according to the press release. As in 2023, when both seats in the Council of States were successfully secured, it wants to rely on close cooperation between the center parties.
Schmidt has headed the Department of Finance and Energy since 2017. The man from Upper Valais has been an active politician for more than 30 years. From 2007 to 2011 and 2015 to 2017, the 62-year-old was a member of the National Council.
From 2000 to 2017, he was a municipal councillor in Leuk, including twelve years as mayor. Prior to this, he was Head of Information and Managing Director of the former CSP Oberwallis.
