This year's Alexander Clavel Foundation Prize for the Promotion of Culture goes to violinist Anna Naomi Schultsz. The award, which is endowed with 35,000 Swiss francs, will be presented to her on May 30 at the Reithalle Wenkenhof in Riehen BS.
After the award ceremony, Anna Naomi Schultsz, born in Basel in 2004, will play works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Edvard Grieg and Pablo de Sarasate. She will be accompanied by her father, the chamber music pianist and conductor Jan Schultsz.
Born into a musical family, Anna Naomi Schultsz performed in public for the first time at the age of four and made her debut as a soloist in a concert with orchestra in Basel at the age of nine. She received her first violin lessons from her mother Isabelle Ladewig. This was followed by studies at the Basel Music Academy and the Munich Academy of Music.
Her repertoire includes 19th century composers such as Camille Saint-Saëns, Maurice Ravel, Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Max Bruch and Jean Sibelius as well as modern and classical music such as Mozart and Beethoven. She performs with orchestras and plays chamber music. She has been concertmaster of the Gstaad Festival Youth Orchestra since 2019.
The Alexander Clavel Foundation, based in Riehen near Basel, has been awarding its cultural promotion prize since 1983 with the aim of supporting young artists or cultural institutions and giving them a platform for a wider public.
