The Winterthur city police arrested a 62-year-old man on Thursday: the Swiss man had hoarded over 40 firearms as well as detonators, prohibited knives, ammunition and weapons accessories in his cellar. A strange smell led the police to the man.

The smell of gasoline was reported to the city police shortly before 4 p.m. on Thursday from the basement of a property. A patrol that was immediately deployed then came across the arsenal of the gun enthusiast, as the police wrote in a statement on Friday.

The pungent odor did not pose any danger - according to the police, it was probably brush cleaner. This is also used to clean weapons.

The 62-year-old arrested now has to answer to the public prosecutor's office for violations of the Weapons Act and the Explosives Act, among other things.
