20 titles have been nominated for the coveted German Book Prize. There are a few surprises on the list. Swiss authors Zora del Buono and Doris Wirth can also raise their hopes.
Female authors dominate this year's longlist for the German Book Prize. 13 women and 7 men have been nominated for the coveted award, as announced by the jury in Frankfurt am Main. The German Book Prize is being awarded for the 20th time this year. The winner will be announced on October 14.
The longlist includes three novel debuts and 13 books by authors who have not yet been nominated for the book prize. Among the well-known names on the list are Nora Bossong ("Reichskanzlerplatz"), Michael Köhlmeier ("Das Philosophenschiff"), Clemens Meyer ("Die Projektoren") and Iris Wolff ("Lichtungen").
Switzerland is represented by the authors Zora del Buono ("Seinetwegen") and Doris Wirth ("Findet mich") as well as the Zurich publishers Geparden (Doris Wirth) and Diogenes (Daniela Krien, "Mein drittes Leben").
The prize is endowed with a total of 37,500 euros: The winner receives 25,000 euros, the other authors on the shortlist 2500 euros each. On September 17, the longlist will be whittled down to a shortlist of six titles. The jury reviewed 197 novels from Germany, Austria and Switzerland that have been published since October or are still to be published.
The German Book Prize is presented on the day before the Frankfurt Book Fair. The authors only find out who has won on the evening of the award ceremony.
