The number of take-offs and landings at Zurich Airport increased year-on-year in March. Part of the increase is probably also due to the early Easter, which fell in April last year. However, the gap to the pre-crisis figures from 2019 remains large.

There were a total of 19,165 take-offs and landings at Zurich Airport in the entire month of March 2024. This is around 5% more than in March 2023. Compared to the previous month of February, the increase is as much as 14%, as an analysis of the data by the news agency AWP shows. However, the gap to the pre-coronavirus crisis level of March 2029 remains considerable at almost 11%.

Busy Easter traffic

The busiest day in March 2024 was Good Friday with 708 flight movements. Traffic was also well above the daily average for March on the other Easter holidays and in the run-up to Easter. Compared to Easter last year, however, the number of flight movements remained stable overall.

There was also little change in terms of the destinations flown to at Easter. There were fewer flights from Zurich to Tel Aviv, for example, which can probably be explained by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In terms of European cities, Prague, Stockholm and Naples were served more frequently, while fewer flights took off for Paris, Nice and Vienna.

The flight movement figures at Zurich Airport are based on daily updated statistics, in which all flights are recorded according to instrument flight rules. This so-called IFR traffic includes scheduled flights as well as cargo, business and private flights. However, the number of flight movements says nothing about the size of the aircraft handled and their capacity utilization.

Zurich Airport will publish detailed passenger and traffic figures for the month of March on April 11.
