The Swiss hotel industry continued to recover in August, resulting in a successful summer season and keeping the sector on track for a record year.
In August the number of overnight stays increased by 2.4 percent to 4.6 million compared to the same month of the previous year, the Federal Statistical Office (BFS) announced on Thursday.
Compared to August of the pre-Corona year 2019, this is an increase of 2.6 percent. The increase is thanks to foreign tourists.
The overnight stays of guests from abroad increased by 9.4 percent compared to August 2022 to 2.5 million.
Swiss tourists were less likely to book stays in Switzerland, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office (BFS). The decrease was 4.8 percent, amounting to 2.1 million overnight stays.
This confirms what local tourism operators feared: Swiss citizens were increasingly drawn to foreign destinations during the summer.
The Swiss hotel industry continues to set records. From January to August, overnight stays increased by 10.2 percent to 28.8 million compared to 2022. Compared to the record year of 2019, there is also an increase of 3.4 percent.
