Meditating as little as 15 minutes a day can help you better process information objectively and make decisions more effectively, according to a Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) study published this week in the scientific journal Economic Letters.
For the study, ETHZ researchers observed 261 participants divided into two groups. One group meditated every day for 15 minutes and the other group spent 15 minutes listening to relaxing music.
Over the course of two weeks, the researchers studied how the participants dealt with processing negative information and emotions by answering questions. For example, participants were asked if they wanted to receive potentially negative information about their finances, health and personal relationships. Researchers observed how the questions did or did not trigger fear and anxiety.
People tend to avoid negative information due to cognitive bias. The participants who meditated reduced their avoidance to the negative information. They were able to better process the information and make decisions about the news objectively. The researchers concluded that meditating as little as 15 minutes a day for two weeks can make people more resilient.
“Someone who copes well with negative emotions will also want to know what could go wrong as a result of a particular decision,” the study author Elliott Ash said. Those who “meditated every day for two weeks were better equipped to simply observe their negative emotions and accept them calmly.”
