Switzerland’s Finance Minister, Karin Keller-Sutter, has indicated that estimates suggesting UBS may need to raise between $15 billion and $25 billion in additional capital are “plausible.”

This statement was made in an interview with the Tages-Anzeiger newspaper following recent government proposals aimed at strengthening the financial stability of banks considered “too big to fail.” According to claims made by Reuters.

Last week, the Swiss government unveiled plans to tighten regulations around major banks, including UBS. These measures are part of a broader initiative to enhance the robustness of the banking sector and mitigate the risks associated with large financial institutions.

While the legislative details are still under discussion and the proposals must undergo the legislative process, the potential financial implications for UBS have sparked significant attention.

Analysts have been quick to project the additional capital requirements for UBS, estimating a range between $15 billion to $25 billion. Keller-Sutter’s confirmed these estimates.

The upcoming legislative journey for these proposals will likely provide further clarity on the precise capital requirements and additional regulatory measures for UBS and other major banks in Switzerland.
