The Federal Council is coming to Aarau. The seven members of the government will hold their ordinary meeting next week “extra muros” in the cantonal capital of Aargau and then meet with the population.

The meeting on April 24 will be the 19th Federal Council meeting to be held outside the Federal Council chamber in Bern since 2010, as announced by the Federal Chancellery on Tuesday.

With its “extra muros” meetings, the Federal Council wants to express its solidarity with the regions of Switzerland, as stated in the press release. President Viola Amherd chose the destination of Aarau for the upcoming meeting.

Aarau thus became the “seat of government” for the second time in its history, once again for a short time. In 1798, during the Helvetic era, Aarau was the first capital of Switzerland for a few months and also housed the first Federal Palace.

The Federal Council held its last meeting “extra muros” (Latin for outside the walls) around a year ago in Winterthur ZH. In 2022, the Federal Council traveled to Münstertal and Geneva for meetings outside its usual surroundings.
