A fierce Föhn storm sweeps through Switzerland, bringing gale-force winds and disrupting cableway services.
A Föhn storm hit parts of Switzerland on Friday morning and caused violent gusts of wind. In Altdorf UR on Lake Uri, a gale-force gust with a speed of 128 kilometers per hour was measured during the night.
In Les Diablerets VD, too, there were gusts of 128.5 km/h later in the morning according to the MeteoSwiss measuring network. But it also blew strongly in the lowlands. Gusts of 111.6 km/h were measured in Meiringen BE and 95.4 km/h in Altenrhein SG.
Due to the storm, several aerial cableways temporarily suspended operations or went into operation later, for example on the Rigi on Scheidegg or on the Pilatus in central Switzerland.
According to meteorologists, the Föhn storm will continue to rage until Monday. On Friday and Saturday, it will reach as far as the lowlands. The strongest phase was expected from Friday to Saturday lunchtime.
