France suggests countries importing its nuclear power help fund new plants, but Switzerland prefers investing at home, says Energy Minister Albert Rösti.
According to the French Foreign Ministry, anyone who wants to import French nuclear power should contribute to the construction costs of new nuclear power plants.
This would also apply to Switzerland – but: “There is no official request from Paris,” says Energy Minister Albert Rösti.
“France considers it opportune that countries that do not want to have new nuclear power plants themselves, but are happy to import nuclear power from France, should contribute to the costs of building the planned new nuclear power plants in France,” the NZZ am Sonntag newspaper quoted a representative of the French Foreign Ministry as saying at the beginning of April.
The statement is said to have been made at the end of March during a press trip to Paris – and explicitly referred to Switzerland.
“Every country must make its contribution to the energy supply in Europe, and Switzerland can do this very well with its storage power plants,” said Rösti in an interview with Tamedia published on Saturday.
“But every country must also secure the supply for its own population. That’s why we’d better invest our money in our own electricity production.”
