Unprecedented Easter weekend precipitation drenches Ticino and surrounding regions.
On Good Friday, Holy Saturday and Easter, a total of over 200 litres of precipitation per square meter fell in certain regions of Ticino. In some cases, more rain or snow fell than the average for the entire month of March.
As the weather service Meteonews reported on Monday, the Mosogno TI measuring station in the Onsernone Valley recorded the highest value at 255 litres per square meter. On a long-term average, 100 to 140 litres can be expected in northern Ticino throughout March.
However, the 159 litres measured in Locarno-Monti also clearly exceeded the March standard. It is 96 litres.
Parts of Valais and Uri also received a lot of rain. In Simplon-Dorf VS, for example, 152 millimetres of rain were measured between Good Friday morning and Easter Monday morning, which corresponds to 152 litres of precipitation per square metre. On the Göscheneralp UR it was 136 millimetres and 136 litres respectively.
Despite the heavy rain and snow, the federal natural hazard map on Monday morning showed only a moderate flood risk for northern Ticino and the Simplon region.
