More than 70 firefighters have been fighting a warehouse fire in the municipality of Plan-les-Ouates GE since early Saturday morning.
While fighting the fire, a violent explosion occurred, which damaged the roof of the building.
According to a statement issued by the Geneva City Fire and Rescue Service (SIS) on Saturday morning, one person was evacuated when the fire department arrived at the scene after 3.30 am. A warehouse building of an industrial laundry and the warehouse of a construction company caught fire.
In an initial phase, the fire department concentrated on preventing the fire from spreading and protecting a warehouse containing chemical products. With the help of the “Alertswiss” alarm application, the authorities called on the local population to close windows and doors and switch off ventilation and air conditioning systems due to the heavy smoke development.
The various fire departments deployed to the scene of the fire with 21 vehicles. The SIS expects the firefighting operation to continue well into Saturday. It and the police have launched an investigation into possible water pollution. The cause of the fire is also being investigated.
