March Continues to See Highs For Those Seeking Asylum

A notable increase in asylum applications in Switzerland, predominantly from Afghanistan.

In March of the current year, the number of asylum applications in Switzerland rose by more than a quarter compared to 2023. At the same time, the number of applications fell by 2.7% compared to the previous month of February of the current year.

A total of 2383 asylum applications were registered in Switzerland in March 2024, according to the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). The country of origin with the most asylum applicants in March was Afghanistan with 1116 applications. This was followed by Turkey, Eritrea, Algeria and Syria. In addition, 1447 people from Ukraine applied for S protection status in March.

According to the SEM, it also processed a total of 3012 asylum applications in March of the current year. Of these, 718 were rejected – 399 of which were based on the Dublin Agreement.

993 people were granted asylum and 542 were provisionally admitted. Meanwhile, the number of cases pending in the first instance fell by 743 to 14,224 compared to the previous month.

In March, 989 people left Switzerland under control or were returned to their country of origin or a third country. Furthermore, protection status S was terminated for Ukrainians in 914 cases.

According to the SEM, protection status S has been terminated in a total of 22,136 cases since it was activated at the end of March 2024. In 4087 cases, termination is under review.
