The incumbent mayor of Lugano, Michele Foletti, was confirmed in a silent election on Monday evening. According to the city administration, the politician from the right-wing Lega dei Ticinesi was the only candidate for the leadership of the city government.

Foletti achieved the best result in the city council elections on April 14 with 11,311 votes. He was followed by former SVP President and member of the Council of States Marco Chiesa with 10,484 votes.

In the run-up to the municipal elections in Ticino, there was speculation that Chiesa might also have ambitions to become mayor of the city. However, Chiesa himself told the media that he had no interest in the office of “Sindaco”.

The 58-year-old Foletti was elected mayor of Ticino’s largest city in October 2021 in a silent election after the then “Sindaco” Marco Borradori died of a cardiac arrest in office in August of the same year.

Borradori had also belonged to the Lega dei Ticinesi and was popular across party lines in Ticino.

Michele Foletti joined the legislature of the city of Lugano in 1992 and was elected to the Ticino Grand Council in 1995. He was elected to the Lugano city government in 2013. Foletti is a self-employed management consultant.
