SBB enhances travel options during Ascension and Whitsun holidays, offering over 52,000 extra seats.
Over Ascension Day and Whitsun, SBB will be running additional trains to Ticino to cope with the high volume of passengers. The railroad recommends planning journeys well in advance, finding out about additional trains and reserving seats.
61 additional trains will run on the Ascension weekend (from May 9) and 48 additional trains over Whitsun a good week later, as SBB announced on Tuesday.
Numerous regular trains will also be extended with additional coaches or train units. In total, SBB is offering more than 52,000 additional seats on Ascension Day and around 47,000 additional seats at Whitsun.
The trains running north-south on the ascent all travel via the Gotthard panoramic route, which means a journey time extension of around one hour compared to the journey through the Gotthard Base Tunnel.
For the return journey on Sunday and for the outward and return journey on the Whitsun weekend, the majority of the additional trains can run through the Gotthard Base Tunnel with shorter journey times.
