Customers at Galaxus can now see where their clothing originates, with most items coming from China.
Galaxus, the Swiss online retailer, now allows customers to see the origin of their ordered clothing directly on the product pages. This new feature, which includes a filter option for the country of origin, aims to increase transparency and customer choice. Unsurprisingly, a significant portion of the clothing comes from China.
Of the 1.18 million items in the fashion and sportswear category, 78% are sourced from China. According to Galaxus, 4% of these items are manufactured in Bangladesh and Vietnam, respectively, and 3% in India. Most fashion items now display their origin.
However, this feature does not yet cover all product categories. Many manufacturers and suppliers fail to provide the necessary information to Galaxus, leading to inaccuracies. When verification is conducted, it often reveals that products claimed to be from Switzerland or Europe are actually from Asia, explains Anaïs Scheiwiller, Product Sustainability Manager at Galaxus.
In total, the nearly 1.2 million products with origin information represent about 15% of Galaxus’ total product range, which includes approximately 7.4 million items. The goal is to increase this to over 20% by the end of the year, with IT, multimedia, and beauty products currently leading the way.
For example, a quick search in the “Shoes” sub-category shows over 140,000 items, with over 20,000 from China and around 6,800 from Vietnam. Switzerland is a minor player in this category, with only two pairs of shoes coming from domestic production, compared to four from the Christmas Islands.
