Swiss organic product sales reached CHF 4.075 billion, with consumer preference for organic certification rising despite inflation.
Sales of organic products increased in Switzerland last year and now stands at CHF 4.075 billion. Products from organic farmers achieved a market share of 11.6% in the retail trade.
In 2022, turnover was still at 3.873 billion Swiss francs, the umbrella organisation Bio Suisse announced on Wednesday.
Organic sales are made up of specialist retailers and direct marketing, among other things. The market share also increased in 2023 and is now 0.4% points higher than in the previous year.
Despite a dampened consumer mood due to inflation and rising prices, consumers turned more often to products with organic certification last year. According to Bio Suisse, there continues to be a long-term trend towards more organic and regional products on the food market.
At the end of last year, 7362 farms had been awarded the organic label. The number of farms had hardly changed compared to the previous year with 21 new additions, the report continued.
There was also only a slight increase in the number of certified traders and processing companies, with 48 new additions. At the end of last year, a total of 1356 licensees had been awarded the organic label.
