The starting point was a verbal dispute between inmates and prison staff shortly after 4:30 p.m., according to a statement from the Basel-Landschaft police. The police arrived with a large contingent and managed to restore order “without the use of police resources” after three hours.

No one was injured in the incident, it was added. At no time was there any danger to uninvolved third parties.

The inmates had been in the corridors and recreation rooms in the afternoon, as is usual in everyday prison life, said a police spokesman in response to a request from the Keystone-SDA news agency. He did not want to comment on why the verbal altercation had occurred – that was still the subject of investigations.
