Last year, more organs were donated from deceased people in Switzerland than ever before. More organs were also transplanted than ever before, as the annual report published by Swisstransplant on Tuesday shows.

A total of 675 people on the waiting list received an urgently needed organ in 2023. In the same period, 200 organs were donated from deceased people, according to the report.

225 people were reported to Swisstransplant, the national foundation for organ donation and transplantation, by families of deceased persons for a review of a possible organ donation after death.

This figure is high if the rejection rate of 58% is taken into account, Swisstransplant also reported.

If the wishes of the deceased are not known, the majority of relatives decide against organ donation.
