From mid-September to the end of October, the German Federal Police refused entry to around 1500 people at the border with Switzerland or revoked their residence permits. This is according to a summary of internal border controls published on Tuesday by the Federal Police Headquarters in Stuttgart.
A total of 2204 unauthorized entries were detected in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg - 1526 at the Swiss and 678 at the French land border. In addition, 20 suspected smugglers were arrested - 14 at the Swiss and 6 at the French land border.
Detailed figures on the border crossings affected were not available. The notification was based on the special reporting service of the Federal Police, a spokesperson for the Federal Police Headquarters in Stuttgart told the Keystone-SDA news agency in response to a query. This does not differentiate within the respective national borders.
By order of the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Police are carrying out checks at all internal Schengen borders. This affects the border crossings in Basel, Aargau, Zurich, Schaffhausen and Thurgau.
