25-year-old stands trial for murder in Basel

A 25-year-old man is to stand trial for murder at the Basel-Stadt Criminal Court on Monday (today). According to the indictment, he allegedly killed another man with a knife on the Lysbüchel site in Basel in August 2021.
The case made big waves in Basel. At the time, the area was a lively place to go out in the summer thanks to temporary use. The Croatian national from Zurich was at a party there and wanted to return to the city center in the early hours of the morning together with three colleagues.
The four encountered another group that was organizing a flea market on the Lysbüchel site. An argument broke out between one of the three colleagues and a 27-year-old man, according to the public prosecutor's office.
The accused, who was 1.90 meters tall and weighed 100 kilograms, intervened in the dispute and stabbed the 27-year-old with a folding knife, according to the indictment. He then fled. All help came too late for the man who had been stabbed - he died after losing a lot of blood. The police caught the alleged perpetrator a short time later near the area.
He is said to have attacked the man, who was behaving peacefully and was physically inferior to him, because of a "trifle" in which he was also uninvolved. He was therefore particularly ruthless in his actions, the report continues.
Accused also previously struck in Zurich
Around a month earlier, the accused allegedly injured a stranger in Zurich with a folding knife after a verbal altercation. He is therefore also charged with attempted murder. He failed to surrender to the police in Zurich at the time. The presumption of innocence applies.
The accused was no stranger to crime. He already had a criminal record for violent offenses. Probably under the influence of drugs and alcohol, he often behaved violently and brutally over trivial matters, according to the indictment.
