The anniversary edition of the Solothurn Film Festival focuses on biographical films. The organizers are focusing on Thomas Mann, women and trans people as well as controversial personalities.
The 60th Solothurn Film Festival is dedicating its Focus section to biographical films, according to a press release issued on Thursday. Accordingly, the Solothurn Film Festival wants to show selected international feature and documentary films and thus shed light on different biographical perspectives.
For example, the Swiss premiere of "Confessions of Thomas Mann the Impostor" is planned. Documentary filmmaker André Schäfer will present his film 150 years after the birth of German Nobel Prize winner Thomas Mann (1875-1955). The film's title is based on the novel "Confessions of Felix Krull, the Impostor" (1954).
Italian director Susanna Nicchiarelli will also be presenting "Chiara". The film is the final part of her women's biopic trilogy and follows "Nico, 1988" (2017) and "Miss Marx" (2020). On the subject of controversial personalities, the Solothurn Film Festival has included the Austrian film "Der Soldat Monika" in its Focus program. Director Paul Poet tells the story of a right-wing libertarian, transsexual elite soldier.
In the Focus section, current topics of international relevance will be put up for discussion. In addition to the films, filmmakers will shed light on their experiences with (auto)biographical material in a series of talks. The focus will be on questions such as: Do we still need stories about heroes and heroines? Which biographies are worth telling? Or what can be shown without risking voyeurism?
The 60th edition of the Solothurn Film Festival will take place from January 22 to 29, 2025. The program will be announced on 11 December.
