Most subsidies in the EU flow into the production of cheese and meat. This is the conclusion of a recent study in the specialist magazine Nature Food.
According to the study, the EU's agricultural policy has a strong influence on the food system through subsidies. According to the evaluation, 82 percent of direct payments currently go to animal husbandry, 44 percent of which is for animal feed.
Meanwhile, animal products provide 65% of protein and 35% of calories in the member states of the European Union. They also account for 84 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from food production.
A similar conclusion was reached a few years ago in a Swiss study commissioned by the Vision Landwirtschaft think tank. According to this study, around four-fifths of agricultural subsidies in this country also flow into animal production.
