In 100 days' time, the Cycling and Para-Cycling World Championships will open on Zurich's Sechseläutenplatz: The major event is raising high hopes among the organizers - far beyond the sport itself.
For the first time, the non-para and para-cycling races will be held at the same time, putting all participants equally in the spotlight, said Christof Baer, CEO of PluSport Switzerland, on Thursday.
The World Championships are therefore much more than just cycling races, noted Zurich cantonal councillor and sports minister Mario Fehr (non-party). The event promotes inclusion and togetherness. Sport has a strong integrative effect, added Filippo Leutenegger (FDP), head of sports in the city of Zurich: "The World Championships in our city make a great contribution in this respect."
The organizers are expecting 850,000 visitors from home and abroad at the cycling races from 21 to 29 September. Over 300 million people are expected to watch the races on television.
