Former Federal Councillor and current Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, has signed a petition for the preservation of the Lido San Domenico in Lugano. The operator of the lakeside resort confirmed corresponding media reports to Keystone-SDA.
According to information from the pool operator Nick Hofmann, Berset has been visiting the Lido San Domenico in Castagnola for many years. In the past, he has often stopped off at Lido San Domenico after business appointments in Ticino, Hofmann told the Keystone-SDA news agency when asked.
Berset is even said to have called the current Lugano city councillor and former member of the Council of States Filippo Lombardi (Center Party) and urged him to leave the Lido in its current form.
The background to the petition is the city of Lugano's intention to turn the idyllic lakeside resort into a restaurant that is open all year round. There is now resistance to this.
"Authentic place "
Under the title: "Lido San Domenico: That's exactly what we want!", the initiators explain that there are far too many "anonymous and soulless public facilities" in Lugano and that the Lido San Domenico is a counterpoint to these. Under the current operators, the lido is an "authentic meeting place with an original music program and a unique atmosphere".
According to the internet platform Change.org, 4825 signatures had been collected by Wednesday evening. As reported by the Ticino daily newspaper "La Regione", the petition in paper form has already passed the 1000 signature mark.
In addition to Alain Berset, the Ticino playwright and director Daniele Finzi Pasca is also said to be campaigning for the preservation of the Lido San Domenico.
