“Almost Elected – Burkart and Giezendanner in the Aargau Region in the Lead”

In the Swiss cantons of Basel-Stadt, Aargau, Graubünden, Solothurn, Baselbiet and St. Gallen, elections for the Ständerat (Council of States) were held on October 25th. Eva Herzog (SP) is likely to remain the representative of Basel-Stadt for the next four years, having won a clear majority of the postal votes. In Aargau, Thierry Burkart (FDP) is leading the field according to the preliminary results, followed by National Council members Benjamin Giezendanner (SVP) and Gabriela Suter (SP). In Graubünden, the incumbent Ständeräte Stefan Engler (Mitte) and Martin Schmid (FDP) are likely to be re-elected, having received 20,850 and 18,156 votes respectively in 65 of 101 counted municipalities. In Solothurn, Pirmin Bischof (Mitte) is in the lead, followed by Christian Imark (SVP), Franziska Roth (SP) and Remo Ankli (FDP). Roberto Zanetti (SP) is not running for re-election. In Baselbiet, Maya Graf (Grüne) is ahead of Sven Inäbnit (FDP). In St. Gallen, the incumbent Ständeräte Benedikt Würth (Mitte) and Esther Friedli (SVP) are leading the field. Daniel Fässler (Mitte) and Erich Ettlin (Mitte/Obwalden) have already been re-elected. In some cantons, the race is close and the decision may not be made until the second round of voting, which will take place between November 12th and 26th. Eight Ständeratsmitglieder are not running for re-election, while 37 are seeking another term. Currently, the Mitte holds 14 seats, the FDP 12, the SVP 8, the SP 6 and the Grünen 5.
