The original painting of the Virgin Mary by Tommaso del Mazza has a new owner. The Zurich auction house Koller auctioned it off on Friday afternoon for 150,000 francs. It became famous because Operation Libero co-president Sanija Ameti used an image of it as a target.
The final bid of 150,000 francs only corresponded to the minimum estimate announced by the auction house in advance. The controversy surrounding Ameti's shooting exercise has therefore clearly not driven up the value of the original to any great extent.
In this context, the auctioneer spoke of the "dubious fame" that the painting had achieved and that some people had "really blown a fuse".
"Madonna with Child and Archangel Michael", as the painting is called, is by the Italian painter Tommaso del Mazzo, who lived in the 14th century.
