Amherd condemns assassination attempt on Slovakian head of government Fico

President Viola Amherd has expressed her "deep shock" at the assassination attempt on Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico on Wednesday. Switzerland condemns all acts of violence, according to a post by Amherd on the online portal X.
"In these troubled times, we must do our best to protect democracy," wrote the Federal President, who is still in Berlin until Thursday.
Fico was shot after a cabinet meeting in the town of Handlova and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The attacker was arrested. The Slovakian government suspects a political motive behind the attack, as it explained.
