The members of Amnesty International Switzerland reaffirmed their support for the inclusion initiative at their General Assembly in Biel/Bienne on Saturday. The initiative was launched by a consortium of Amnesty, Agile.ch, Inclusion Handicap and the Foundation for Direct Democracy and Action.
The initiative offers a unique opportunity to realize the vision of an equal and inclusive Switzerland, according to a resolution adopted. The 1.7 million people with disabilities in Switzerland are still excluded from public life in some areas and restricted in their self-determination.
However, they must also be able to participate in economic, social and political life in a self-determined and equal manner. This also means including their perspectives and removing and overcoming obstacles. After all, their rights are human rights. Swiss voters should be given the opportunity to enforce equality for people with disabilities.
The Amnesty members also called on Switzerland to speak out unconditionally in favor of compliance with international law and an immediate ceasefire in the conflict in Gaza. In a further resolution, they called for the release of funds to the Palestinian relief organization UNRWA, continued aid for the Palestinian population and an end to impunity in Israel and the occupied Gaza Strip.
