The drama "Anatomy of a Case" was awarded Best Film 2023 by the European Film Academy in Berlin on Saturday evening. Switzerland was also represented with four nominations for co-productions. However, they came away empty-handed.
French director Justine Triet also won the award for Best Director 2023 for "Anatomy of a Case", which tells the story of a successful writer under suspicion of murder.
German actress Sandra Hüller also won the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role in "Anatomy of a Case". Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen was named Best Actor for his performance in the film "Bastards"; the 58-year-old was presented with the award via video.
Four nominations with Swiss participation
Four productions with Swiss participation were in the running for the 36th European Film Awards. Georgian actress Eka Chavleishvili was nominated in the best actress category for her leading role as Ethéro in the Swiss-Georgian co-production "Blackbird Blackbird Blackberry". Geneva-based Alva Film Production co-produced the film. The plot revolves around Ethéro, who is almost fifty years old and lives in a village in Georgia. When she falls in love, she has to make a decision: either continue the relationship or lead an independent life.
British actor Josh O'Connor was nominated for Best Actor. He plays the lead role as archaeologist Arthur in the Italian-Swiss co-production "La Chimera" by Alice Rohrwacher. The film is set in Tuscany in the 1980s. It revolves around a gang of grave looters who throw their looted goods onto the international art market - there is also a connection to Switzerland in terms of content, albeit an unglamorous one.
The 16-minute "Flores del Orto Patrio" was nominated in the best short film category. The content of the Swiss-Colombian co-production revolves around a group of queer activists in the Colombian Caribbean. The film "Longing for the World/L'Amour du Monde" was also a contender in the European Young Audience Award category.
Lifetime achievement for Vanessa Redgrave
British actress Vanessa Redgrave ("Blow Up") was honored for her life's work. Hungarian film director Béla Tarr ("Sátántangó") received the Honorary Award of the President and the Board of the Academy.
In addition, Spanish director Isabel Coixet ("The Secret Life of Words") was honored for her services to world cinema. The European Film Awards are usually presented alternately in Berlin and another European city.
Award ceremony in Lucerne
In 2024, the 37th European Film Awards will be presented for the first time in Switzerland at the KKL in Lucerne. The partners of the European Film Academy will then be the Federal Office of Culture, the City and Canton of Lucerne and, as media partner, the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG). Switzerland wants to present itself as a destination for film production and a partner for co-productions.
The European Film Awards have been presented by the Berlin-based European Film Academy since 1988. They are among the most prestigious awards in the industry.
