From today, Tuesday, a further 600 people from the canton of Zurich will be taking part in Switzerland's largest cannabis trial. Since the opening of the first sales outlets in May, 2,200 people have already been smoking cannabis legally on a trial basis. Products with a low THC content are particularly in demand.
The demand for these products with a THC content of five to nine percent is high, contrary to all expectations, the Swiss Cannabis Research association announced on Tuesday. The Zurich-based association is conducting the study together with an independent research team from the University of Zurich and the KOF Swiss Economic Institute at ETH Zurich.
Products with a THC content of 20 percent are also very popular. According to the press release, the average content of black market products is around 13 to 15 percent. "The black market is obviously producing products that do not meet the needs of customers. And with inferior quality to boot", Paul-Lukas Good, founder and president of Swiss Cannabis Research, is quoted as saying.
Over the next five years, the study aims to research the consumption behavior of a total of 7500 people. According to the association, the aim is to be able to discuss the regulation of cannabis. Cannabis is to be made accessible for recreational use. The project is financed by donations and has a budget of 1.5 million Swiss francs.
Potheads keep a consumption diary
In May, the association launched the legal sale of cannabis in the canton of Zurich. Residents of the 34 participating Zurich municipalities can take part and buy cannabis legally in Swiss Cannabis Centers and pharmacies in Zurich, Winterthur, Schlieren, Horgen and Dübendorf.
Some of the participants are given the opportunity to keep a consumption diary - in order to reflect on their own consumption and recognize potentially harmful patterns at an early stage. Similar cannabis studies have already been launched in other cities, including Zurich, Lausanne, Basel, Bern, Biel and Lucerne.
