Hiking in Switzerland is to become even safer. The Swiss Council for Accident Prevention (BFU) now wants to have routes assessed by experts according to danger, i.e. risk of falling, and the required technology. The information will be freely accessible to hikers - and can be accessed via an app on a smartphone, for example, as the advice center reported on Tuesday. It is not yet clear when the service will be available.

"Accidents often happen because hikers misjudge the risks and challenges along the way," said the advice center. Careful planning is essential. Many accidents happen because hikers overestimate their abilities or misjudge the risks.

Every year, around 50 people die in hiking and mountain hiking accidents in Switzerland, more than in any other sport, reported the advice center. Around 37,000 people are injured.
