The first weekend in April also brought the first summer days and numerous temperature records. In Basel-Binningen, it was over 28.8 degrees on Saturday and the night also remained very warm in places. In Delsberg in the canton of Jura, 25 degrees Celsius was measured shortly after midnight.

The weather service Meteonews reported on Sunday morning that a south-westerly wind measured exactly 25 degrees in Delsberg at 0.50 am. In addition, according to MeteoSwiss, a measuring station in Payerne VD at around 1500 meters above sea level registered an "extraordinary" 17.4 degrees Celsius at midnight.

A new record of 4.3 degrees was also measured on Piz Corvatsch GR on Sunday, according to Meteonews. And in La Brévine NE, the April record from 2018 was equaled at 22.8 degrees.

Subtropical air and Saharan dust

On Saturday, temperatures in some places even reached just below 30 degrees, with thermometers reading 27.7 degrees in Delsberg JU and 27.3 degrees in Sion VS in addition to Basel-Binningen.

According to Meteonews, numerous April records were also broken: In Chur GR, the previous temperature record was beaten by 0.8 degrees, in Fahy JU by 0.3 degrees, in Adelboden BE by 0.5 degrees and on the Weissfluhjoch by 0.9 degrees. Specifically, 28.5 degrees were measured in Chur at 4.40 pm, 25.6 degrees in Fahy JU, 22.4 degrees in Adelboden and 8.9 degrees on the Weissfluhjoch.

The exceptionally warm subtropical air flowing over Switzerland was responsible for the high temperatures, wrote MeteoSwiss. On Sunday, the Sahara dust that this current brought with it also arrived. The air was somewhat hazier than on Saturday and visibility was significantly poorer.

Monday is also expected to be "exceptionally warm" once again.
