The ultra-liberal Argentinian President Javier Milei is coming to Switzerland again. He plans to take part in an event organized by the Liberal Institute in Zurich on 24 January 2025, as announced by the institute on Wednesday.
Argentine media reported that Milei will once again be attending the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos GR. This will take place in the same period from January 20 to 24. There was no official confirmation for the time being.
According to the organizers, the time and location of Milei's appearance at the Liberales Institut think tank have not yet been determined. According to the Institute's announcement, "there is probably no other politician in the world at the moment who is promoting liberal reforms with such consistency and courage". The director is Olivier Kessler, the protagonist behind the No Billag initiative.
Economist Milei already took part in the WEF in Davos this year. It was his first trip abroad as President of Argentina. Unlike other guests, he did not travel to Switzerland in a private jet but on a scheduled plane, allegedly to save money. On his arrival, he was greeted by fans at Zurich airport.
Milei took over the presidency of Argentina at the end of 2023 amid a severe economic crisis and announced a radical austerity program. The once wealthy country suffers from a bloated state apparatus, low industrial productivity and a large shadow economy that deprives the state of many tax revenues.
Milei now wants to get South America's second-largest economy back on track. The government has already cut thousands of jobs in the public sector, reduced subsidies and slashed social programs.
