The Armed Forces Social Service advised more people last year and yet spent less money. The number of counseling dossiers rose from 1541 to 1881, while expenditure fell from CHF 674,000 to CHF 583,000.

The main reason for the decrease in expenditure is that the federal government increased the minimum rates for the income replacement scheme at the beginning of 2023. This was announced by the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport on Thursday.

The Armed Forces Social Service (SDA) helps members of the Armed Forces, the Red Cross Service and the Civil Defense who encounter difficulties in their personal, professional or family circumstances as a result of their compulsory service.

Assistance is also provided to people performing peace support and assistance service abroad who find themselves in need as a result of this service. The SDA also supports members of the armed forces who have had an accident or fallen ill, or their relatives and surviving dependants of deceased military patients.

Last year, the SDA continued and selectively expanded its support for members of the armed forces who have not completed initial training as part of the "Lavoro" project. The SDA carries out this project together with experts from the Canton of Berne.

According to the annual report published on Thursday, the SDA had nine employees in 2023. 56 militia social workers also worked for it.
