A total of 9297 new sentences and measures were started in Swiss correctional facilities last year. This is a slight increase compared to 9121 in the previous year.
More than 90 percent of cases last year involved men, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) on Monday. The rate was the same in 2022.
In 2023, custodial sentences (38%) and substitute custodial sentences for unpaid fines (42%) were executed most frequently, according to the FSO. Foreign nationals accounted for two thirds (67%) of the prison population, while Swiss nationals accounted for almost two thirds (64%) of the prison population.
According to the FSO, 2823 sentences were carried out in the form of community service, which corresponds to slightly less than a quarter (23%) of all sentences started this year. At just over a quarter (27%), the proportion of women was higher here than among those in prison.
3 percent of all sentences started were carried out with an electronic ankle monitor. In contrast to community service, electronic monitoring is most frequently used for custodial sentences, in almost exactly half of all cases, according to the FSO.
