Following several attacks on Swiss ATMs, the authorities arrested four suspects at a highway service station in the canton of Lucerne on Friday evening. In Interlaken BE, there was also a major police operation involving house searches.
The four men were stopped at the service area at around 7.30 p.m., as reported by the Bern cantonal police and the Federal Office of Police (Fedpol) on Saturday. The air force was also deployed.
The men are "strongly suspected" of being connected to attacks on ATMs, the authorities said. They did not provide any more detailed information on the background, referring to further investigations. The actions were connected to criminal proceedings by the Office of the Attorney General of Switzerland (OAG).
As soon as explosives are used, the OAG is generally responsible. It is currently conducting criminal proceedings in around 100 cases, it told the Keystone-SDA news agency. There are indications of links between various cases, which it is following up in its ongoing investigations.
