Two people were killed in an avalanche accident in the Italian Alps on Sunday. The avalanche occurred in the morning not far from the Swiss border in Val Formazza in the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola region.
According to a report by the Italian news agency Ansa, the two had been on a ski tour. Rescuers recovered one dead person from the masses of snow. Another was found in Lago di Toggia at around 2,200 meters above sea level.
The recovery of the body from the water was still underway on Sunday afternoon, according to Ansa. The work was proving difficult due to bad weather, it said. The Italian authorities did not initially provide any information on the identity of the two dead.
