The Axenstrasse in the canton of Uri between Flüelen and Sisikon UR will remain closed until midday on Tuesday due to the rockfall on Monday night. The exact extent of the damage is currently being assessed on site.
Jérôme Jacky, Head of Information and Communication at the Federal Roads Office (Astra), said on Tuesday at the request of Keystone-SDA. Among other things, the nets designed to cushion rockfalls and possible damage to infrastructure will be checked.
At around 8 p.m. on Monday, surveillance instruments detected movements in the "Gumpisch" area, as reported by the Uri cantonal police on Monday evening. As a result, the road was closed and traffic diverted. No persons were injured. According to initial findings, no roads or bridges were damaged.
Axenstrasse is an important feeder route to the A2 highway and thus towards the Gotthard road tunnel.
