The canton of Basel-Stadt is extending the study on regulated cannabis dispensing in pharmacies by a year and a half. The extension is intended to gain further insights into the consumption behavior of participants, as the Basel Department of Health announced on Friday.
According to the canton, the pilot project launched in January 2023 has been successful so far and is now set to run until January 2027. Originally, the trial with 378 participants should have ended in July 2025.
The canton intends to make two adjustments in order to gain further insights into the consumer behavior of participants, according to the statement. For example, it wants to expand the available range with "lower-risk" products. Specifically, two e-liquids and two tinctures will be added to the range. So far, six cannabis products have been available to participants.
The "Drug Checking" service will also be introduced. The aim is to inform consumers about the composition of cannabis purchased on the black market.
The extension will be financed from the proceeds of cannabis sales, among other things. The Federal Office of Public Health and the Northwestern Switzerland Ethics Committee have approved the extension, according to the press release.
