On Monday night, the celebration of the eve of the Swiss National Day in Basel was marked with a fireworks display that was shortened by a third to 16 minutes, but this did not detract from the overall impression. Around 100,000 visitors were expected to line up on both sides of the Rhine in numerous festival restaurants and fill three Rhine bridges, all waiting for the highlight of the fireworks at 11pm. Before that, there were various events such as a rowing competition by the Waterway Association "Fischer-Club Basel" and the traditional fireboat demonstrations. There were also performances by yodelling choirs, alphorn formations and entertainment orchestras in various places in the city centre. The budget for the Swiss National Day celebration on the Rhine was 180,000 francs. According to the Basel Cantonal Police, the private setting off of fireworks on July 31 and August 1 was only allowed from 6pm to 1am. It is completely prohibited within a radius of 200 metres of hospitals and animal parks. It was not possible to obtain information on site as to how consistently this restriction was observed.
