The Tierschutz beider Basel (TBB) wants to renew the current board of directors at the delegates' meeting of the Schweizer Tierschutz (STS) on January 27. Public criticism and loss of reputation have triggered the dispute. STS President Nicole Ruch defends herself.

At the upcoming STS delegates' meeting in Olten SO, the TBB would like to submit a proposal for a search committee to put together a new presidency and a new board by the summer. This was confirmed by TBB Managing Director Béatrice Kirn at the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency. Blick Online first reported on this.

According to TBB, agricultural engineer Michel Roux and SP National Councillor Martina Munz (SH) will also be represented on the new board. Both were suspended from the Board of Directors in September 2023.

The reason for the new composition of the board is the poor reputation and the criticism that the STS is attracting from the Basel section. Since October, the TBB has lost 15 to 20 percent of its donations and has lost ten long-standing members in the last week, according to Kirn. The public criticism of the STS has also led to the certification body for charitable non-profit organizations (Zewo) advising against donations to Swiss Animal Protection.

As the umbrella organization for all regional sections, the STS should actually represent the political interests and issues of the grassroots, Kirn continued when asked. Instead, President Nicole Ruch had become entangled in side business.

The already known allegations relate to misappropriated donations and excessive expenses, among other things. Ruch announced via a spokesperson on Friday that the allegations are not true. In the meantime, the management is being reorganized in terms of professionalism and transparency.

The TBB's application for a transitional board and a search committee will be discussed at the STS next week.
