A third ballot is needed to elect the successor to SP Federal Councillor Alain Berset. Beat Jans was clearly ahead in the second ballot with 112 votes. He was followed by Daniel Jositsch with 70 votes and Jon Pult with 54 votes.
The votes for Jositsch are likely to have come from the conservative camp. In the run-up to the election, various SVP, FDP and centrist representatives had expressed their dissatisfaction with the official SP ticket on which Jans and Pult stood. Both candidates were too left-wing.
National Councillor Gerhard Andrey (Greens) received fewer than ten votes in the second round of voting. Jans, Jositsch and Pult therefore remain in the race to succeed Berset.
Although he is not on the official SP ticket, Zurich Councillor of States Jositsch did not take himself out of the race. He did not do so a year ago, which cost him a lot of sympathy in his party. At that time, Jositsch had run and received votes even though the SP parliamentary group had backed a woman's ticket.
