Social Democrat Beat Züsli was elected by voters on Sunday for a third term as Mayor of Lucerne. The conservative parties were unable to wrest the office from the left.
With an absolute majority of 10,202 votes, Züsli received 11,363 votes. The 60-year-old Social Democrat was the first left-wing candidate to be elected "Stapi" in 2016. Stefan Sägesser (GLP) ran against Züsli with the support of the FDP and the center, but only received 7542 votes.
In addition to Züsli, Korintha Bärtsch (Greens) was elected to the five-member city government on Sunday. She succeeds her party colleague Adrian Borgula, who did not run again.
The incumbent Finance Director Franziska Bitzi (center) only came fifth, behind the new candidates Marco Baumann (FDP) and Melanie Setz (SP).
