This year's Music Prize of the Canton of Bern goes to Malcolm Braff, Gabrielle Brunner, Annalena Fröhlich and Reverend Beat-Man. This was announced by the Bernese Department of Education and Culture on Tuesday. The prize money amounts to CHF 15,000 each.
The young talent award, worth 3,000 francs, goes to the band Mouche-Miel from St-Imier. The five prizewinners represent the great diversity of Bernese music-making, the canton announced. The prizewinners were judged by the cantonal music commission.
According to a press release, Malcolm Braff has built up an international reputation as a pianist, improviser and teacher over the course of his long career. As a solo violinist and chamber musician, Gabrielle Brunner devotes herself in particular to contemporary music.
Annalena Fröhlich has established an artistic practice based around sound, sound design, performance and video art. Beat Man Zeller - better known as Reverend Beat-Man - is an innovative musician and founder of a record label who has become an integral part of the Bernese music scene, wrote the canton.
